Chances are, if you’ve been using PAP therapy for more than a couple of years, you’ve got an old device hanging around. We’re keeping an updated list of local and national organizations that can help you sell or donate your new or gently used equipment to those in need.

Purpose: Breathe California of the Bay Area is a non-profit founded in 1911 that fights lung disease in all its forms and works with its communities to promote lung health. They envision a world that promotes healthy lungs and a healthy environment. 

Where: They receive donated CPAP and BiPAP machines from hospitals, sleep centers, and individuals.  They clean and test the machines to ensure they work properly, then redistribute them to clients.  When the clients receive a machine, Breathe California asks for a donation amount between $55 to $105 depending on the type of machine.  The machines come with new hose and filters, and they have new masks available for $10.  For clients not in the area, they offer to ship the machines for an additional $40.  If you’re local, you can drop off equipment at their location in San Jose (see above). 

Accepted donations: New or used PAP machines less than 6 years old. New supplies only.

How to donate: Call or email Caitlin (contact info above) to arrange for a donation. You will hear back within 3 days.  They request an additional $40 donation to cover shipping and packaging costs and they will provide a donation receipt for the value of the equipment plus the $40 that can be used for your taxes.

How to request equipment:  Call or email Michael (contact info above) to request a device or supplies. You will hear back within 3 days. A prescription is required to dispense any equipment and no proof of financial need is required.

The Reggie White Foundation

Purpose: The Foundation was co-founded after Reggie White’s premature death, by his wife Sara, in conjunction with the Sleep Wellness Institute in West Allis, Wisconsin. They recognize the role that sleep apnea played in cutting Reggie’s life short, and want to help people of all economic backgrounds to understand the symptoms and risks of this disorder. They provide CPAP therapy equipment to those who might otherwise be unable to secure the needed equipment. CPAP equipment is provided to patient’s who qualify for the foundation’s assistance and who have a current prescription for the equipment.

Where: Nationwide. The foundation also accepts donations that are shipped to their facility.

Accepted Donations: They accept certain PAP machines based on their age. They will ask you to send a picture or description of the machine you wish to donate so they can find out if they can get parts (for the older machines). They also accept donations of supplies if they are still in their original packaging and unopened.

How to Donate: Submit the CPAP donation form found on the website or email manager@donatedcpap.org to inquire about equipment you wish to donate.  All donations must be pre-approved. Sender must be willing to pay shipping charges. A charitable donation letter will be provided. 

American Sleep Apnea Association

Purpose: The American Sleep Apnea Association provides help for diagnosed sleep apnea patients who have no insurance, high insurance deductibles, or through financial hardship cannot afford this critical and life-saving medical equipment.

Where: Nationwide. ASAA accepts donations that are shipped to their facility.

Accepted Donations: The CPAP program needs donations of CPAP, Auto CPAP, Bi-Level (learn about different types of PAP devices here) and heated humidifiers, factory sealed masks and new unused tubing (learn about different types of PAP replacement supplies here). 

How to Donate: Submit the CPAP donation form found on the website or email manager@donatedcpap.org to inquire about equipment you wish to donate.  All donations must be pre-approved. Sender must be willing to pay shipping charges. A charitable donation letter will be provided. 

The Kibogora Initiative via Second Wind CPAP (www.secondwindcpap.com )

Purpose: Second Wind CPAP specializes in quality discounted ‘open box’ new and gently used CPAP & BIPAP equipment for those individuals who could not otherwise afford it. SecondwindCPAP is proud to be part of the The Kibogora Initiative, now in its 15th year. The program was originally created to care of the children of Rwanda who lost their parents to genocide and war. Since that time, the program has grown, with those very children they helped, to broaden their scope to assist in the resolution of critical issues surrounding health care in the local communities. The focus of SecondwindCPAP is to provide donated CPAP devices to the Kibogora Project, for the treatment of Rwandan’s neonatal population.

Where: Nationwide. Second Wind CPAP accepts donations that are shipped to their facility.

Advocates for World Health

Purpose: Advocates for World Health is a not-for-profit corporation that recovers surplus medical products and distributes them to relief agencies working in developing nations. The medical products they recover provide medical humanitarian aid and improve healthcare access in impoverished communities while preventing these life-saving materials from going to waste.

Where: Nationwide. Advocates for World Health accepts donations that are shipped to their facility. They will make arrangements for local pickup in Central Florida.

How to Donate: Advocates for World Health strives to reuse as many donations as possible. They accept functioning medical equipment, as well as semi-functional and inoperable machinery. As long as the condition of the equipment is fair, they have trained technicians to repair minor damage and ensure the product’s functionality.

To recycle your medical equipment and schedule a pickup (local or for large donations from hospitals or clinics), fill out their donation form. Alternatively, you can ship donations directly to their warehouse address listed above.

The Durable Medical Equipment Aid Society

Purpose: Thousands of individuals in Southern California who have on-going physical limitations, or who become disabled due to illness or injury, have limited or no access to the wheelchairs, walkers, or other durable medical equipment that they need to assist in their daily living, their recovery from illness or injury, or to cope with on-going or recurring physical limitations due to limited financial or insurance resources. The Durable Medical Equipment Aid Society (The DME) is a locally based, non-profit organization that supports and promotes the re-use of gently used durable medical equipment and makes that equipment available, free of charge, to these individuals.

Where: Southern California

How to Donate: The DME will accept donations of new and used durable medical equipment. While they are not accepting CPAP donations at this time, they can help provide equipment to those in need. Please contact them to arrange donations of other durable medical equipment online http://www.thedme.org/contact-us or by calling or emailing (info above).
