Amy Poehler writes: “Sleep helps you win at life.”

“I slept wherever I could. Twenty minutes at lunch. During production meetings. In my car. I remember being filled with rage when childless people would talk about brunch.” Sound like you after a horrible night’s sleep? That’s the sardonic account of Amy Poehler, actress, comedian, writer, producer, and renaissance-woman-with-kids-and-sleep-apnea.

You’d think celebrities could hire someone to sleep for them, but just like us normal people, they suffer from sleep disorders that disrupt every fiber of their day. In her newly released memoir Yes Please, Amy likens sleep deprivation after children “to what it must feel like to walk on the moon and cry the whole time because you had heard that the moon was supposed to be great but in truth it totally sucks.”

An abysmally colorful picture indeed, but not far off from what the sleep-deprived feel as they grow depressed, lose focus and reasoning abilities, gain weight, or deal with impaired judgment. Whether it’s a moon walk or a trip to the park, sleep deprivation can smother the joy out of otherwise positive activities.

At the age of 40, Amy finally went to a sleep center like Advanced Sleep Medicine Services. She was diagnosed with sleep apnea, a sleep disorder in which an individual repeatedly stops and starts breathing. Loud snoring, feeling fatigued after a full night’s sleep, and waking up with headaches are often indicators of this potentially serious condition. An estimated 38,000 individuals die each year from complications associated with sleep apnea.

Could you be suffering from a sleep disorder, too? Take our brief questionnaire to see if your symptoms may be indicative and contact us to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

“One good night’s sleep can help you realize that you shouldn’t break up with someone,” Poehler writes, “or you are being too hard on your friend, or you actually will run the race or the game or get the job. Sleep helps you win at life.”
